What Are The Benefits of Using LED for Acne?
As an Esthetician who specializes in acne, I love discovering new modalities and tools to further enhance my clients’ treatments. This is why early on I decided to start offering LED therapy services. LED is extremely beneficial, but most people don’t know why or how it works, so I thought I’d shed some light on the topic.
How does LED work?
LED stands for Light emitting diode (LED). Using varying wavelengths, LED helps to:
• treat acne
• reduce inflammation
• promote anti-aging effects, such as increasing collagen production
What is also great about LED Is that anyone can be a candidate. LED therapy is safe for all skin colors, and it doesn’t cause any burning. Because LED doesn’t contain UV rays, it is considered a safer form of light therapy that won’t cause long-term damage to your skin. It is also noninvasive and has very few risks.
There are different frequencies, or wavelengths, used with LED light treatment. Most common are red light and blue light frequencies, which don’t contain ultraviolet rays and are readily absorbed into the skin.
Red light frequency:
Red light LED targets the epidermis, the outermost layer of skin. When the light hits the skin the epidermis absorbs it and this stimulates collagen proteins. And most people know that more collagen means that your skin will look, plump, smoother, fuller and more youthful! Red light also improves circulation, therefore reducing inflammation giving you a healthier glow.
Blue light frequency:
Blue light LED targets the sebaceous glands, which are more commonly known as our oil glands. The sebaceous glands throughout our bodies are important for lubricating our skin and hair so that it doesn’t dry out. Unfortunately, when these glands become overactive they become clogged, leading to acne. Blue light is especially beneficial for oily/acne prone skin because it targets our oil glands and makes them less active, leading to fewer breakouts! I especially love working with blue light because it can also kill acne-causing bacteria beneath the skin, improving severe acne like cysts and nodules.
In my clinic, I work with Celluma light therapy. Celluma is FDA cleared for the treatment of acne and goes above and beyond to achieve better and faster skin-clearing results. Unlike other LED devices available on the market, Celluma is flexible and conforms closely to the treatment area for optimal efficacy.
Are you curious to try LED light therapy? Add it on to any services with me and experience for yourself the amazing benefits! It’s safe, effective, all-natural, and is wonderful for overall skin health.
